He was known as his stage name Oma Irama before he made a pilgrimage to Mecca and became a haji. He later took the name Rhoma Irama, which is an abbreviation of "Raden Haji Oma Irama" (Raden is an aristocracy title for Javanese and Sundanese cultures). Rhoma Irama is a member of aristocrat class of Sundanese from both his father, Raden Burdah Anggawirya, and mother, R.H. Tuti Juariah.

His career began in the late 1960s when he recorded solo records and with the group Orkes Melayu Purnama. He sang duets on several record LPs with Indonesian female vocal stars such as Inneke Kusumawati, Ellya Khadam, Lily Junaedhy, Vivi Sumanti, and the later to be crowned 'Queen of Dangdut', Elvy Sukaesih. Once Oma broke from recording with the Purnama Group, he eventually formed Orkes Melayu Soneta, the first so-called Dangdut group. Once Soneta was established in the early 70's, Oma changed his name to Rhoma and went on a decade long run of successful hit records and films, all of which starred Rhoma playing himself while performing all of his hits.

Melly Goeslaw

Mellyana Goeslaw Hoed [məliana guslau hut]; born 7 January 1974), better known by her stage name Melly Goeslaw, is an Indonesian singer and songwriter. She began singing while in the fifth grade, then began writing songs and took work as a backing vocalist for Elfa Secioria in high school. This led to her family and her moving to Jakarta to further her career. While providing backing vocals for a promotional tour by Katon Bagaskara, she met Anto Hoed and Andi Ayunir. After marrying Hoed, the three formed the band Potret in 1993. Their 1995 debut album was well received, bringing Goeslaw and her bandmates to fame. After releasing several albums with Potret, Goeslaw attempted to begin a solo career, releasing her self-titled debut album Melly in 1999. Although Melly sold well, she became more popular as a solo artist after providing the soundtrack for the 2002 hit film Ada Apa dengan Cinta? together with her husband. Her later releases include solo albums and soundtracks. In 2005, she released a collection of short stories to celebrate her tenth year anniversary as a popular musician; four years later, she directed a concert to celebrate the bicentenary of Bandung city. As of 2011, she has written over 500 songs.

Goeslaw was born in Bandung on 7 January 1974. She is the daughter of Melky Goeslaw, a singer and songwriter, and his wife Ersi Sukaesih. After her parents' divorce, Goeslaw was raised by her mother; her sister Yuli, who now serves as her manager, was born from a second marriage. While in elementary school, she enjoyed writing poetry, later recalling that she "was happiest when doodling on paper, writing poetry". While she was in the fifth grade, she began singing after being convinced by her mother, who was convinced that Goeslaw could sing like her father; originally she did not want to be a singer.

She later switched to songwriting while in high school, writing lyrics on napkins and schoolbooks and recording her humming on a Walkman because she could not play any instruments. During high school, she worked as a backing vocalist for Elfa Secioria. Her family eventually moved to Jakarta to further her singing career, and she was requested to be a backing vocalist for three different pop singers. At one point, she was recording at three different studios every day. The money that she earned convinced her to continue singing.

After replacing a backing vocalist for Katon Bagaskara's promotional tour for the album Dinda, Goeslaw met Anto Hoed and his friend Andi Ayunir. After marrying Anto later that year, they went on to form the band Potret. The band's first album was released in 1995, with the song "Terbujuk" ("Seduced"), dealing with "the ultimate material girl", becoming instantly popular. The band was very popular between 1995 and 1998.While with Potret, Goeslaw wrote numerous songs. Some were written conservatively as they were ordered by singers such as Krisdayanti and Ruth Sahanaya; other songs, generally the more "biting" ones, were used for Potret's albums.

One of the her songs on Potret's third album, "Diam" ("Silent"), which dealt with the abuse of women, caused some controversy due to the perceived amount of violence in the music video. Despite this controversy, "Diam" won Video Musik Indonesia's award for best interpretation of a song.

In 1999, Goeslaw started her solo career with her self-titled debut album, which sold well. Her second album, the soundtrack for the 2002 teen movie Ada Apa dengan Cinta? (What's Up with Love), in which most songs were sung by her and written by her and her husband, led to her being more popular as a solo artist than with Potret; she was also given the nickname the Queen of Movie Music. Ada Apa Dengan Cinta's soundtrack later won Best Soundtrack at the Indonesian Film Festival.

Goeslaw later provided the soundtracks for 2003's Eiffel I'm in Love, 2005's Apa Artinya Cinta (What does Love Mean), 2007's The Butterfly, and 2009's Ketika Cinta Bertasbih (When Love Prays). She considered the writing of songs for Ketika Cinta Bertasbih to be more difficult than her previous work in teen romances, as it was a religious film. As such, she felt that she had to be extra careful.

In 2005 Goeslaw released a collection of short stories that she had written to celebrate her tenth year as a singer. One of the stories, "Tentang Dia" ("About Him/Her"), was later filmed by Rudy Soedjarwo, the director of Ada Apa dengan Cinta?. In 2008 Goeslaw wrote and sang "Dibius Cinta" ("Drugged by Love") for the soundtrack of Cicakman 2 – Planet Hitam (Cicakman 2 – Black Planet) with Malaysian singer and director of the film Yusri, from the band KRU. Melly requested permission to help with the scoring after watching the original Cicak Man.

After initially refusing to perform solo concerts because of creative differences with the event managers, in 2009 Goeslaw held her first concert, "Glow, Melly Live in Concert", at Senayan Stadium in Jakarta. The concert, directed by John Fair Kaune and presented by Krisdayanti's KD Productions, featured a "virtual duet" with Goeslaw's deceased father and was divided into two portions, one featuring songs from her time with Potret, and one with songs from her solo career. It also featured new songs written by Hoed especially for the concert. The following year she was head of Kampung GASS, an organizing committee for a concert celebrating the 200th year since the founding of Bandung.

Goeslaw is also active scouting for new singers and assisting others, having supported the careers of pop singers Irwansyah and Acha Septriasa. In 2011 she invited aspiring singers to post videos of themselves singing her songs to YouTube or her Facebook profile, later noting that she had already discovered several new talents in that manner. As of 2011, she has written over 500 songs.
 Songwriting

Goeslaw is married to guitarist Anto Hoed. Together they have two children, Anakku Lelaki Hoed and Lelaki Bernama Hoed (literally My Son Hoed and Boy Named Hoed). In her spare time she enjoys shopping, playing with her children, and browsing the internet; she has stated that she finds it increasingly difficult to enjoy shopping due to being constantly recognized. She has stated that she prefers being backstage over giving concerts, as she does not have to wear make-up or rehearse.

Mr Chrisye

Chrismansyah Rahadi (16 September 1949 – 30 March 2007), better known by his stage name Chrisye ([xərifə]), was an Indonesian progressive-pop singer and song writer of mixed Chinese-Indonesian descent.

Born in Jakarta, Chrisye became interested in music at a young age. By high school, he played bass guitar in a band that he formed with his brother Joris. In the late 1960s, he joined Sabda Nada (later Gipsy), a band led by his neighbours, the Nasutions. In 1973, he joined the band to play in New York for a year. He briefly returned to Indonesia and then went back to New York with another band, the Pro's. When he returned to Indonesia, he collaborated with Gipsy and Guruh Soekarnoputra to record the 1976 indie album Guruh Gipsy.

In 1977, after the success of Guruh Gipsy, Chrisye recorded two of his most critically acclaimed works: "Lilin-Lilin Kecil" by James F. Sundah, which eventually became his signature song, and the soundtrack album Badai Pasti Berlalu. These successes allowed him to sign with Musica Studios, with whom he released his first solo album, Sabda Alam, in 1978. Over his nearly 25 year career with Musica, he released eighteen more albums. He also acted in a single film, 1981's Seindah Rembulan. On 30 March 2007, he died in his Jakarta home after a long battle with lung cancer, leaving behind a wife, Gusti Firoza Damayanti Noor, and four children.

Chrisye, known for his stiff stage persona and smooth vocals, received critical acclaim in Indonesia. Five albums on which he contributed were listed in Rolling Stone Indonesia's list of the 150 Greatest Indonesian Albums of All Time, while another five of his songs (and a sixth he contributed to) were named as some of the best Indonesian songs of all time in a later issue. Several of his albums received certification of silver or higher. He received two lifetime achievement awards, one in 1993 from the BASF Awards and another posthumously in 2007 from Indonesian television station SCTV; Rolling Stone Indonesia declared him the third-greatest Indonesian musician of all time in 2011.

Personal life

Aciu Widjaja, now President-Director of Air Asia, described Chrisye as a simple man and said that one time, when he, Chrisye, and several others had gone overseas Chrisye was the only one who did not look for brand-name clothing or world-class restaurants; instead he ate at a food court and bought what he felt was comfortable. In his biography, Chrisye noted that he enjoyed eating at roadside foodstalls well after his marriage and would be perplexed when people stared at him.Guruh recalled that he would sleep anywhere possible during extended planning sessions, including under the piano.

After his marriage to Yanti, she stopped her singing career and became a housewife. After they had children, there were times when Chrisye had little time to spend with them as he was busy performing or recording; however, he attempted to spend as much time with them as possible, at times picking the children up from school. In a 1992 interview, he said that his children did not want to follow their parents' footsteps and become singers because they had seen the stresses it put on the family.

Honours and awards

During his career, Chrisye received numerous awards. In 1979 he was selected as Favourite Singer of the Indonesian Armed Forces. His albums Sabda Alam and Aku Cinta Dia were certified gold, while the albums Hip Hip Hura, Resesi, Metropolitan, and Sendiri were certified silver.

Chrisye received three BASF Awards, held by the BASF cassette production up to the mid 1990s, for bestselling albums; his first was in 1984 for Sendiri, followed by one in 1988 for Jumpa Pertama and one in 1989 for Pergilah Kasih. He received the BASF Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994 for his contributions to Indonesian music; the same year he received the BASF Award for Best Recording Artist. In 1997 he received an Anugerah Musik Indonesia for Best Male Pop Singer. The following year Kala Cinta Menggoda won nine AMIs, including Best Album; Chrisye himself received awards for Best Male Pop Singer, Best Recording Singer, and Best Graphic Designer (shared with Gauri). In 2007, he posthumously received the first SCTV Lifetime Achievement Award; it was accepted by his daughter Risty.

Illness and death (2005–2007)

Chrisye's grave in Jeruk Purut Cemetery

In July 2005, Chrisye was checked into Pondok Indah Hospital, complaining of difficulty breathing. After thirteen days of treatment, he was moved to the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore, where he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Although he expressed concern about losing his hair, which he considered part of his image, he underwent the first of six rounds of chemotherapy on 2 August 2005.

Chrisye's health improved in 2006, and he was able to sustain long interview sessions with Alberthiene Endah in May and November 2006 as she prepared to write his biography. He also released two compilation albums, Chrisye by Request and Chrisye Duets; however, he reportedly did not feel well enough to release new songs. By February 2007, however, his health was fading.

Chrisye died at 4:08 AM WIB (UTC+7) in his home in Cipete, South Jakarta. He was buried in Jeruk Purut Public Cemetery, South Jakarta, on 30 March 2007. His funeral was attended by hundreds, including Indonesian celebrities such as his collaborator Erwin Gutawa and singers Titiek Puspa, Ahmad Albar, Sophia Latjuba, and Ikang Fawzi. The funeral, however, was marred by the actions of pickpockets, one of which was captured but later released.

A hundred days after Chrisye's death, Musica released two compilation albums. Entitled Chrisye in Memoriam - Greatest Hits and Chrisye in Memoriam - Everlasting Hits, the two albums contained fourteen hits from albums ranging from Sabda Alam to Senyawa. On 1 August 2008, Chrisye's last single "Lirih" ("Gentle Voice"), written by Aryono Huboyo Djati, was released posthumously. The song's existence was previously kept secret, and the recording date is unknown. Djati has said that it was recorded "for fun". A music video directed by Vicky Sianipar and featuring Ariel Peterpan, Giring from Nidji, and Chrisye's widow was later released.
